Black stains on wall above electric heater!

Hi All,

I've lived in a rented flat for some years and have an electric convection heater wall mounted in the lounge. Over the years, a faint but noticable (to me) dark stain has appeared above it... Possibly carbon or something to do with dust?

I hoover the heater out quite frequently and it has been tested... I just wondered if anyone knew how to get rid of this black mark without repainting the whole room. I've been advised not to use water as this can make it worse... Somebody did say something about a 'soot sponge' but I've not been able to find anything like this in the shops.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Its dirt! You get it above nearly all heaters including rads. Get the worst of it off with a sugar soap solution, apply stain block to stop it leeching through, repaint that area, do it again in a couple of years.
