I moved in the rented accomidation on the 5th December 2009 where the tenant before got put on a meter due to him running a massive debt

I just want to go to the direct debit a month

You'll need to contact any supplier direct and see what they will agree to.

Some suppliers may not agree at all (until you have been there/with them 12 months at least), whilst others may be prepared to consider your request. Expect any that does to possibly carry out a credit check, the outcome of which may or may not result in credit (in the form of a credit meter) being offered.

Some may also require a security deposit (typically of about £300, but returnable with interest if you pay the bills). There may also be a charge of about £50 to change the meter, although some suppliers will do this for free.

You may also want to check with your landlord that he is agreeable with you changing the type of meter.

  • There's some useful advice on this very similar thread: Best way to get rid of prepayment meter? Sorry, I'm not able to post a link.

EDF energy remove prepayment meters once you've been with them on prepayment for a month. They removed ours early December which was great timing!
