What I'd be inclined to do is leave the router where it is - it works.
Get a pair of HomePlug's, and a standalone wifi access point and place it centrally downstairs. No unsightly cables, no faffing around with telephone extensions, no chance of upsetting the router, just using your existing house wiring to extend the network.
Not the cheapest, but by far the easiest.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Thanks again
Fifer savemoney and espresso very interesting I will investigate the home plug idea although I am warming to the long Ethernet cable idea ,normally I am capable of doing things like that myself but not if I go up the side of the house its too high for me.
Thanks again you are all stars.

You can easily get made up Ethernet cables e.g. 20M for £4.37 first Google hit here and this is by far the best option as presumably the office is fixed. This is a money saving site, so although Homeplugs could be used, they are not necessary, would cost much more and even use electricity constantly.
I completely agree that cable is the simplest, cheapest and most reliable solution if a cable can be easily routed between floors. But that isn't practical for many people (particularly from an aesthetic point of view) without considerable chasing, routing, patching and decorating effort and cost. It wasn't for me and I'm a competent DIYer.
A pair of 85mbps Homeplugs consume around 8 or 9 watts when powered. They only need to be powered when the upstairs PC is being used. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
