house insurance for an emptyhouse

Dear All,

Does anyone know?

I have an empty house with no furniture in as it has been being remodernised, but i do still have contens and building insurance for it.

I have been informed that the insurance is void as its empty so i am wasting my money on paying for it.

Is this true?

Well, you need to disclose this information to your insurer and let them decide on the unoccupied status of the dwelling.

They may charge you more, they may not. They may add special terms to the policy which you need to adhere to and/or limit the type of cover you have.

It does not necessarily mean your insurance is invalidated, but you have to let your insurer know material facts such as this.
  • Hi,

There are a number of specialist insurance brokers who will provide some cover for vacant property undergoing renovation. In general the terms they apply are more strict than a normal policy e.g. security and/or visiting the propertry, and also the perils they provide cover for are normally reswtricted to Fire Lightnig and explosion only, they don't give theft or wet perils like escape of water. Best to do an internet search. Also if you are going to buy a policy make sure you know the short term cancellation process so when you are going to move back in you don't get short changed on the refund.

    Good luck.
