Hi
I wonder if someone could help me with capital allowance calculations for my April 2008 / April 2009 tax return.
I have no capital allowance for Apr 2008 - Apr 2009 but I do have some carry forward capital allowance from my Apr 07 - Apr 08 tax return.
Here are my carry forward figures:
Main pool: £5731.88 - remainder of a van
Balance of first year expenditure - £515.70 (50% of tools total for Apr 07 - Apr 08)
I know I claim back 20% of the main pool but confused about the balance of first year expenditure for tools. Do I claim back the whole amount or just 20% of this amount too? I.e I claimed 50% of total for tools in Apr 07 - Apr 08 (i.e 50% of £1031.40), therefore do I claim the remaining 50% in Apr 08 - Apr 09 or do I claim 20% of the balance of first year expenditure (20% of £515.70) in Apr 08 - Apr 09?
Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance

The 50% balance that was not claimable last year should have been added into the general pool which contained the balance of the van. So your brought forward figure is £6,247.
Then you just claim 20% of the pool unless the balance is below £1,000 when you can write it all off if you so wish.If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0
