Solid Wall Insulation

Hey was just looking for some advice.

I live in a solid wall tenement with very cold outer walls.
I am currently re-decorating and was looking at getting insulating lining paper/polystyrene fitted to these. Unfortunately there appear to be no grants etc. for solid walls and only for cavity. As cash is a bit tight I am undecided between two I have seen in B&Q:
Wallrock Thermal Lining £49.98 a roll
or
Efurt MAV Insulated Lining paper £9.98 a roll

Obviously you want to do the right thing as I will not re-decorate for some years, but the first is very expensive. Does anybody have any experience of these and has anybody been in a similar situation?
Thanks very much

The first on the list needs a proprietory paste that comes at £30 per tub and is enough for just two rolls.

You used to be able to get polystyrene on a roll, not sure if you still can. You put it on the wall using ordinary paste and then put a lining paper over it.

I just looked and found some of the type I was talking about, from Wickes:

  • Has anyone used the Wallrock Thermal Lining paper - what were you results? Is there any info with regards its actual effect - e.g. U-values etc?
  • The poly is a fire hazard. The Wallrock has no proven data or confirmed UV value Try here they have some funding for soli wall insulation using a product called sempatap though I beleive this depends on which authority you reside within www heat and energy dot org
  • I'm struggling to make sense of solid wall insulation... What's the meaningful difference, if any, between Sempatap and Wallrock Thermal Liner? And all other things being equal, would it be better to use a thicker type of insulation - one of the solid board things with a layer of insulating material?
    Thanks!

If you own the property then take the bull by the horns and dry line using insulation backed plaster board on all outside walls.

  • As I suspected - but where can I get hold of this kind of plasterboard? Does it require a pro to fit? (And move radiators, power points etc, I assume...) Google is telling me nothing!

Yes - you can get it at your local builder's centre. It's a big but doable DIY if it doesn't include moving radiators - that's the hassle. Try getting a quote from a builder .

Is one option any builders merchant, will either stock it or be able to source it for you yes all your fixtures will need moving on to the new plastered finish.

Its not difficult to put up but a bit beyond basic diy. I would only consider it if the plaster is already falling off.

Energy saving trust informed me and sent me a sample of a product that is like foam based but with a hard shell that just paste on internal walls it about 8mm thick but its pricey, cant remember name now
  • Great thank you everyone, I think I would rather get a builder to do it as my DIY skills are zero and I would want to have it done right! Now at least I will know what I'm talking about!
