Can i get some money back if a train journey is delayed?

I was on virgin trains yesterday and a 18:15 train in which i had seat reservations got cancelled. I had to wait until 8pm to get a train and stand for more than 2 and a half hours. This train got to london at 22:40 whilst my original train was due to get into london before 20:30.

Have you looked on Virgin's website?

It depends on the type of ticket you hold.

Probably yes, as its well over 1 hour late. Call up Virgin Customer Services and complain - they'll send you out a claim form.

You can get half or the whole ticket price back depending on the length of the delay - I don't know Virgin's policy on this but it's a customer charter requirement. It doesn't matter what sort of ticket you had.

The refund is in vouchers for future travel - which would not have to be on Virgin.

I'm sure you're right Dzug... that does sound reasonable.

However, the FAQs on the Virgin website say...
Where can I check how much of a refund I am entitled to?

Please check the Terms and Conditions of the ticket to find whether a refund is applicable with the type of ticket you have.
They do seem to make things difficult though.
If you ask them this question...
Can I claim compensation for a disrupted train?
You get the following ridiculous answer...
If you have a compensation request for Virgin Trains then please submit feedback to our Customer Relations enquiry by clicking here and selecting Comments on our Service.
