vitamin B12 and M.E

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask this advice but here goes anyway. i am seeing a osteopath who is giving me treatment called the perrin technique for M.E its very early days yet to say if its working, but he has suggested Vitamin B12 injections which have worked well for some people. my GP is pretty useless but he agrees "they can't do any harm" although he won't prescribe them or administer them. thats ok as you can buy them and i'm ok with self injecting.
i just wondered if anyone had ever had them and did they feel any better for it. x

No, no, no, a thousand times no.
take your doctors advice every time.
B12 is usually given for pernicious aneamia where the body cannot take vitamin b12 into it through the stomach wall and so has to be injected for the rest of (my life) It can kill in some cases.

google b12 or pernicious aneamia on the internet and speak to your doctor again.

The Perrin technique is just another way of getting money from M.E patients for totally unproven treatments. Its up there with all these therapies. Get your GP to refer you to a Neurologist that will be of far more use to you
  • I want to try b12 injections and will ask my new consulant about them when i see him next week. My nan (who has MS (I have ME)) used to find them a great help with boosting energy, but it seems every doctor has a different opionon. My gp said they used to be able to perscribe them if your b12 levels were normal to see if they would help but they are no longer allowed, if he thinks its ok then try it providing you can afford it but only with his support (or another doctor)

I have B12 injections for pernicious aneamia however that is via my GP and with complete medical back up and proven results. Your GP has given you his opinion and I would suggest you take that rather than any unqualified opinion from an alternative practitoner or from us casual users on an internet forum.

thanks for the advice, my doctor refers to M.E as yuppy flu so i tend to take him with a pinch of salt. Dr Sarah Myhill who specializes in M.E is very keen on B12 injections. guess its back to the drawing board

What an ignorant prat! I'd be changing GPs as quickly as I could!

I'm an odd one, I have had a lot of senior consultants diagnose me with everything over the years most of which I downright refuse to accept. I am left though with some odd neuro issues , some 'funny' blood and coeliac disease. I potentially have Hashimoto's as well which is a thyroid issue but they can't agree on that one as my blood confuses many of the usual tests for it.

I'm having a B12 jab tomorrow actually first thing monday morning ready to face the working week.

Oh don't i wish, we live in a very remote area and there are only two doctors in the practice, ones bad and the other ones worse. i was very low a few years ago after we lost our young son, i went in to see him and said (wrongly i now know) i wished i could end it all and he said if i felt it was the best course of action then its the one i should take. i did make a formal complaint but it didn't do me any good. thankfully i don't see much of him as i mainly go to the hospital.

That's awful - I'm so sorry you have to put up with that. :( What terrible behaviour.
