This years TAX bill works out at £2080 but he owes from past years £12000 (think its past 6 years which he has neglected to pay!) Its £1500 before tax but didn't realise that when out in the calculator but I have inputted the £200 per month we pay to tax in the outgoings column.
    Thanks

I am self employed aswell. Does he offset any expences against his tax bill? You say about fuel. You can claim by reciept or by the mile. If you go by the mile you can't claim fot car tax, insurance, mots etc. I think it's 40p per mile upto 10,000 miles. I find I am better off myself going by the mile, plus it's easier as you have all the info you need on the speedo.

I'm a bricklayer, still in work yay! :), so I can also claim against tools, clothing etc.

Can he claim for any of the above? If he is doing 10,000 miles a year then just that would take £1000 off the bill give or take a few quid :)
  • You will probably find that the taxman is actually MORE approachable than you think - it costs nothing to ask.

They are approachable , BUT they have targets to meet , I am amazed that they have let it go on so long , they are really pushing hard at the moment to get defaults settled over short time scales . You do need to speak to them they, have a habit of suddenly demanding payment within days , you dont want to be caught unawares

£12k is a lot to find and remember interest is added on a daily basis , the OP needs to get professional advice , saving a few pounds here and there wont help , unless they can pay off a big lump up front

You say a CCJ was granted 2 years ago - what payment schedule did the court order give ?

I would suggest first port of call is Inland Revenue for an up to date statement of what is owing.

You've got 9k in assets, car, cash etc .. Have you got any fines/penalties on top?

No no fines or penalities, I could look into selling the car but have to have one for my job (totally essential) also it was a gift from my parents so would feel bad selling it but maybe needs must, will have a chat with them, its great though as its still under warrenty and is stupidly cheap to run so would have to look into running costs of a new ish one.
    Thankyou

  • Husbands van is his boss' but I think he claims all he can for fuel to and from work.
I have no idea whats been happening with payment schedule, my husband didn't even know he had a CCJ, we have to look into what notice they gave us but I would assume that there were letters that got lost in moves.

When he went onto council tax etc here we recieved letters from Tax office, I will get my DH into gear and get a full breakdown from the Tax man asap. I really hope they dont just demand it.

Thankyou again for your responces, they are much appreciated.

Not being funny but if you want to tackle this head on then you may need to change your plans and return to work earlier than planned and at least to start with at full time hours. Depending on your childcare arrangements etc you should be better off back at work (and what your salary was before you went on SMP). The best value child care is a childminder - do spend the time to find one you are happy with though!
