Essex to Heathrow by train with heavy bags?

Hi All

I need to get to Heathrow Terminal 3 from Wickford in Essex on a Friday afternoon. I will also have two large heavy bags and I'm a 5ft female. I haven't been on the Tube for years so here's my question.

What's the easyist way to go considering the heavy bags ? I see I'll have to get on the circle line then change to the Piccadilly line, and that goes out to Term 3. But I want to avoid stairs etc. Do most stations have escalators etc. And do the Tube trains have areas to put my bags like on a normal train?
All advice welcome

Get a lift / cab / bus to Epping Station and change at Holborn for the Piccadilly line. Theres some stairs but not many, if you can travel at off peak (after 9.30 and before 5pm to 7pm ish) and dont be afraid to ask for a hand from another passenger - a smile goes a long way :)

Have you thought about going by coach ? I attach a link
to National Express, I can't see a departure from Wickford but there might be from a nearby town.

There is a coach from Basildon Trafford House to Heathrow. My sister has used it many times with no problems and its cheaper than the train without having to worry about changing or stairs

A bit misleading. There are quite a few steps when you are changing from the Central to Picadilly line, more than I would want to lug two heavy bags up and down.

Best place to change to the Piccadilly line is Hammersmith where it's a cross platform change. Get the Circle Line to anywhere clockwise, say Victoria, change (stay on same platform) for the District - Ealing or Richmond train - to Hammersmith.

Only steps are getting to the Circle Line at Liverpool St.
  • For the return journey take the Picadilly Line to King's Cross then the Circle line to Liverpool Street. That avoids the bridge to/from the anti-clockwise Circle Line platform at Liverpool Street.
  • Many thanks for replies, I have looked at getting the coach but its £40 compared to £16 by train, plus there's a 3 hour wait at Stansted which is going in the wrong direction anyway !!
I'll get the train and ask for help from tall handsome strangers !!!
  • Like you said, just ask if someone will help, trains are usually full of friendly people
