Call me stupid if this is a really stupid question, but how can you possibly know that breast feeding isn't an option until the baby is born and she's tried it?!

(I have no kids, and wouldn't know things like this, but everyone I know who's had a baby only knew that BF was not an option after a couple of weeks of trying without much success. Most of them were gutted!).

It is perfectly reasonable to know in advance that you cannot/will not breastfeed, for various reasons. The question is normally asked by those without children yet, don't worry.

Ahhh, I had just assumed that everyone gave breast feeding a try with each pregnancy, then many give up because they don't like it or whatever reason.

I didn't realise some people just refuse to even give it a go!!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

It's always good to have a back-up system for something as important as feeding a newborn in case things don't go to plan.

Do you still get 'Bounty' packs when you give birth?

Some people actually can't, rather than refuse to try. That's quite a hurtful comment for mothers who couldn't breastfeed (not me, but others).

IMO only a fool would have no back-up system for if breastfeeding really doesn't work out and have no bottles on stand-by for a baby who is screaming in the middle of the night because it can't get milk out and is desperately hungry.

Yes, and at several points during pregnancy and the following months after the birth. All full of leaflets and adverts and a few useful bits and bobs for mum or baby.

Trust me, after having mastitis for 6 months, breastfeeding was not an option! The last thing I would even have thought of after being like pamela anderson on one side. Was so big I couldn't eat sign my name normally, it just got in the way!

There are many other problems that can prevent a woman from wanting to breastfeed, breast is not always best for baby, only a mother can make that decision. I know it certainly wouldn't have been a good idea for me, health being more important.

I think pinkshoes comment about mother's refusing to breastfeed is a bit strong. But, you don't really tend to think about these types of things until you have a baby on the way. I agree with your comments mazza as I too had problems in the chest department and decided before giving birth not to breastfeed. I did have one midwife who gave me the tut tut treatment but I soon put her in her place!!! It's all down to personal choice but a back up plan is a definite as babies are most unpredictable in what they like and don't like!

medical reasons for one. after having my two i went straight back onto my medication that stated no breastfeeding.

however, the op's friend has known for 9 or so months she is expecting a baby so to not have a steriliser inn place before birth is a bit careless. understand the whole sale thing but people having babies need to be prepared with the basics and sod the non-necessities.

i know people who have spent fortunes on changing units [a big no-no as dangerous], moses baskets and cribs [hey one or the other], they see an item for sale they feel they have to buy it.

Berating? Where! She professed a lack of understanding at worst...and admitted she hadn't had the experience!
