my mate wants a credit card to transfer a balance of around 4/5k but before applying wants to know whether the CC companies prefer employed or self-employed applicants? he is employed part time by a company but also does his own jobs as well but wants to make the application look as good as possible. also any other things to look out for on the form to improve chances of success?

Generally long term employed is treated more favourably.
He might want to consider telephone applications so he can speak to someone rather than relying on an automated decision that can't be immediately referred to an underwriter."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0 -
He has to be honest - if the paid job is his main one then he is employed otherwise he is self employed.
If it is really 50-50 then I would suggest putting other and detailing the separate incomes on a piece of paper.0
