Painting a re-skimmed ceiling

Hi all,

I've just had my kitchen ceiling re-skimmed. I know new plaster needs special treatment before painting etc, but does same apply to walls/ceilings that have just been skimmed rather than fully-replastered?

Any advice would be great,

Thanks in advance,

CW

  • Let it dry out completely and then give it a scratch coat (a thin coat of watered down paint matt emulsion is best for this) then paint as normal no special treatment needed as far as im aware.
  • Ditto above worked every time for me even on totally new plaster, you can buy plaster sealer but I never have.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • Won't the paint crack if the plaster is not sealed properly? I am sure something else is used to seal plaster - not watered down emulsion or you could end up with aforementioned cracking.

I run a Maintenance Company and we do a lot of decorating on new plaster. So0rcy is right. Get some cheap MATT emulsion and water it down 50/50. Apply as normal and once dry emulsion with 2 coats of ordinary emulsion. We only ever do ot this way and have never had a call back. All prof decorators will tell you exactly the same thing.

Agree, 50/50 emulsion water no problems.
  • Many thanks for your replies - I'll pop off to Wilko to buy their budget paint!
