first year service on car

My Hyundai i30 is approaching its first service (bought Feb 2009). Am I obliged to use an authorised dealer to maintain the service history and 5 year warranty or can I use another garage? If I can use another garage do I have to ensure they follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedule?

Never had a "new car" before so don't know what to do, but, like everyone else I'm a bit short of money and don't want to be ripped off by the dealer prices.

Any Hyundai owner's out there? How much have you paid for a service?

If I can use another garage do I have to ensure they follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedule? Yes they must, in order to preserve the warranty.

Someone should be along soon who knows a bit more...

Whilst you're not obliged to use the dealer network to service your new vehicle, the block exemption regulations put an end ot that, it is preferable to do so in the early years, particularly through its warranty period. When reselling potential buyers like to see a good dealer service history. Having said all that I do believe the BER is due to expire this year.

Also a lot of dealers offer a free breakdown service which you'll only get if you have your car serviced at the dealer network.

But BER has not run out yet - and could well be renewed.

Garage has to be VAT registered, vehicle has to be serviced in accordance with manufacturers instructions, ie annually or every so many miles etc., and genuine or equivalent parts used. Best to use genuine, we do. So you do not have to go to the dealership! But find a GOOD independent garage and make sure they know what they are doing!

And they can stamp your book - a dealership stamp is important to some people.... lord knows why....

Have you checked the prices of dealer servicing, so you know if it will be worth the saving.
If you decide against the dealer then use a good recommended independent garage, not one of the multiples like Kwik Fit and others too numerous to mention.
My sons Merc was serviced at our local garage, Merc wanted £500, we paid £240. They used genuine parts and the proper recommended oil, but the car was four year old and previously had full Merc service history.

Don;t Hyda offer something like a 5 or more year waranty???

If I'm right keep the right side, if you intend to keep your car,;););)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • You may find that you dont get the full 5 years warranty if you move out of the dealer network as this is over and above what the law says they need to provide.

The other issues are that if you dont have a dealer history and you decide to sell in the next couple of years you will probably get knocked back a couple of hundred (or more) if you PX, and you have no chance of any goodwill in the event of anything that can be on the edge of warranty work.

I opt to pay a little bit more (and in my case it is only about 30 - 40 quid more) and have a nice stamped book, a good cup of coffee while I am there, a nice shiney courtesty car to get to work in, and a free valet while they have it

You need to make sure the hyundai schdule is followed and genuine hyundai parts are used (including oil and air filters). I think (but am not sure) it has to be a professional garage too.

If it's a 1.6CRDi it's important it gets ACEA-C4 oil not ACES-B4 as it will have a Diesel Oxsidising Catalayst, and requires the low smoke oil.

Fellow i30 owners may be able to recommend a dealer or alternative location for service near to where you are, and they can certainly tell you the going rate for 1st year dealer services.

This is the place to ask, friendly people:

I'm an owner, but I'm no where near my first service yet.

Specifically here is a member showing his invoice for a 1st year dealer service on hist 1.6L petrol, for exmaple:

Total £115 - the special oil for a diesel costs more.

Don't assume dealer prices are a rip off and get quotes, then make a decision.

JeannieBlue answer is pretty much word for word what I would have said. Only thing I would add is that some manufacturers insist on a paintcheck to maintain there 12 year corrosion warranty and also a neat row of franchised dealer stamps always gives second hand buyers a warm glowing feeling and can make selling your car easier and increase its used value.

Personally I always use main dealer for 1st and 2nd service as price differentials are not that much. When it gets to 3 years then harder to decide.

My Vauxhall dealer is pretty reasonable for a first service (£112).

Also bear in mind that some manufacturers use the first service to apply any software updates or minor recall items so if you go elsewhere then you may miss out on this.
