we have hired and paid for a car as we are going to america on holiday,we have now been phoned and asked to pay an extra $90 dollars as we are dropping the car off in a different location to it being picked up,we were not told this at the time and it seems a bit unfair ,but legally where do we stand? do we pay up and shut up or what?? any advice gladly welcomed.

It's pretty usual to take a hire care back to the place you hired it from. One way rentals generally attract an extra charge.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

Lots of companies allow you to drop a car off at a different location without charge, although some stipulate it has to be in the same state.
They normally make clear any such charges at the time of booking, so this seems bad practice and worth a complaint/ threat to take your business elsewhere.0 -
Can I ask are you dropping it off in the same state?
A lot of car hire companies allow you to drop the car off in a different location for free providing it is in the same state you hired it from, if not it incurs an extra cost.
However, they usually state this extra charge at the time of booking so unless it's the cheapest you can find, I would cancel and rebook somewhere else
Edit: didn't see Backbiters post! same kind of advice!0 -
thanx all for the advice, was just a bit annoyed that they told us 2 days after we had booked and paid that they wanted more money...0
