Thanks for that...is that a dial up one...and are they easy to change....or do i need to get a technician in ...?0

Thats a shame. Mine just finished on eBay with no bids!
You should be able to get a 56K for about £5 and an ADSL one for not much more. If you are wnating an internal one, its dead easy to replace. Open the case, unscrew the modem, pull out and slot in a new one. If you have XP it should sort everything out for you (r.e. Drivers) but keep the CD/floppy it shipped with handy just in case.
Oh yes, read the installation instructions first! Some ADSL modems require you to install software prior to opening up the case.
Or you can get a USB modem - Just plug it in.0 -
Thanks for that...wat does ADSL mean..is that for dial up..because I use AOL's dial up..and it says the modem has not got a dial tone...0

If you are getting a message that says "the modem has not got a dial tone" can you hear a non interrupted dial tone on your phone? Have you connected the lead from the modem to the phone socket? Have you tried the modems diagnostic test? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Before you go and get new modem, you might want to try some of the steps below. Occurred a few times to me when I was on dial-up, and nowt wrong with the modem, think drivers had been corrupted or something of that ilk. Anyway worth a bash.
Have cut and pasted from AOL help on dial-up for you. Hope it helps....
Error: Modem cannot detect a dial tone
This is an error that occurs when the modem cannot get a dial tone from your telephone line. This can occur if the cable from your modem to your telephone line has been disconnected or there is someone already using the telephone line at your location.
Step 1: Troubleshoot using AOL Offline Help- Ensure that AOL is offline, click the Help Menu at the top of the screen and select the AOL Help option. Alternatively, press the F1 key on the keyboard to launch the AOL Offline Help section.
- Click the plus icon (+) to expand the Connecting to the AOL service options
- Click the plus icon (+) to expand the Resolving connection Problems section
- Click Modem has reported No Dial Tone and follow the troubleshooting steps.
Step 2: Check your Modem Connection- Make sure that your modem is connected directly to the wall socket, with no cable splitters on the line.
- Make sure the telephone cable is connected to the correct socket on the modem. If there are two sockets, it should be connected to the one marked Line.
- Make sure nothing else is plugged into the same phone line (e.g. fax machine, digital TV set-top box, etc.).
Step 3: Close other programs running on your PC
Please make a note of or print these steps.
Windows 98SE and Windows ME- Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys simultaneously on the keyboard and press the Delete key. This will open the Close Program screen which will list all the programs running on the computer.
- From that list of programs, its is only necessary to keep running Explorer, Systray and RunDll, if they appear.
- Highlight the first program in that list that isn't any of the necessary items above and click on End Task. This will return you to the desktop.
- Another window may appear, saying 'This program is not responding', click End Task.
- Repeat the same steps to close the programs until only Explorer and Systray (and RunDll if present) remain in the list.
- Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys simultaneously on the keyboard and press the Delete key. This will open the Close Program screen which will list all the programs running on the computer. Ensure you are on the 'Applications' tab.
- From that list of programs, its is only necessary to keep running Explorer, Systray and RunDll, if they appear.
- Highlight the first program in that list that isn't any of the necessary items above and click on End Task.
- Another window may appear, saying 'This program is not responding', click End Now.
- Repeat the same steps to close the programs until only Explorer and Systray (and RunDll if present) remain in the list.
- To close the Windows Task Manager click the X in the top right corner of the window.
Step 4: Clear your modem setup
AOL 8.0 and below: Clear your AOL modem setup- Start the AOL software.
- On the AOL Sign-On Screen, click Setup and then click Expert Setup.
- Click on the Devices tab, choose your modem from the list and click Delete.
- Exit the AOL software and restart it again. AOL will attempt to auto-detect your modem.
- Then try to connect to AOL again.
AOL 9.0: Run the 'I cannot get connected to the AOL service' Auto Fix
Note: Make sure that any external modem is connected, powered on and that AOL is offline.- Close open programs, sign-off AOL.
- When offline, click Help on the AOL menu bar (at the top of your screen), then click AOL Help.
- Click the + beside Resolving Problems, and then click Solving Common AOL Problems.
- Click I cannot get connected to the AOL service.
- Close all programs (including AOL) and click Continue.
- Follow all on-screen instructions.
Step 5: Repair the AOL Connectivity Service- Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
Windows XP - click Start select Control Panel. - Double click Add/Remove programs.
Windows XP - Double-click Change/Remove Programs. If you don't see this option, click 'Switch to Classic View' in the top left hand corner. - Select AOL Connectivity Services from the list and then click Change/Remove.
- Select Repair AOL Connectivity Services.
- Click OK to start the repair process and click OK to any informational prompts.
- Close all open windows and re-start AOL.
- Enter the location name (i.e. Home or Work, click Next. AOL will now auto detect your connection device.
- Confirm the connection device to use (e.g. your dial-up modem or Broadband) by clicking Next.
- Click Sign on to AOL Now.

I will certainly try that when I get home. As for espresso's question. I dunno exactly what wrong, but when signing on, I can still use the phone...ie- ring someone, and it says on my computer that it is dialling up, then it comes up with the message. I have called AOL support who have told me to do numerous things...which i can't really explain to you, but finally they concluded it is either ma phone line or the modem. I called up a BT engineer who said the line was fine, so I am concluding I need to change the modem.....
Hope that helps0 -
Ah yes..........been down that line with AOL on the phone, tis a wonder I have any hair left! Actually that's a bit unfair, it's a bit hit or miss, have had good advice and nowhere near good advice in the past!
Just another thought........we had loads of thunder and lightening the other day here...did you suffer a storm, could be that your modem has fried! In which case, make sure you use a surge protector.
Good luck.0 -
lol..i will definetely try that...0

ADSL is a broadband modem, and probably not relevant.. But you might want to consider moving to broadband if it is available in your area.. It's cheap nowadays, and much faster..
