Benefit While in Hospital

A relative has been getting incapacity while in hospital for the last 52 weeks, there is no sign of him getting home in the near future and we have been told that his rate of payments will change now he has reached the 52 weeks. Has anyone any idea of what he is likely to get now and also does he automatically get tranfered to another rate or do we have to reapply? Many thanks in advance. Jacqui

Employment Support Allowance and Incapacity Benefit
Employment Support Allowance or Incapacity Benefit will usually stop after you have been in hospital for 52 weeks.

Thanks for that I have had a look and it seems right his money will now stop but what will he get to live on now then? He still needs to have clothes etc so surely he must get some money0

if he has no income but needs anything he should speak to the hospital who maybe able to help, failing that surely his family could provide what few needs he will have whilst in hospital?0

Thanks for the replies, his family can provide most things for him but, they were surprised to find out his income would just stop. He has had I beleive £89 per week for the past year and the family have managed to keep his rent and other payments up to date and provide all his personal things from that but, I think they had thought he would still get some money even after the 52 weeks. Thanks again and I will pass this on to them Jacqui0

Things have improved so much since the late `90s your benefits stopped after 6-8 weeks and they even stopped paying your HB+CTB so you were up the creek with a "pocket money" of a few pounds a week to pay for everything including your rent where as the relative in question would have had there rent paid unless they had savings that made them ineligable for means tested benefits.
For the past 52 weeks they would have minimal costs and its not unreasonable to expect that most of that money would have been saved.0
