MOT Fail Rates.....

Thought some of you may find this interesting, Came across it on the BBC website earlier.

It shows the top 10 worst MOT failing cars (2007) according to VOSA's failure rates on 3 year old cars having their first MOT. It doesnt say though how severe the failures are though:

    Thanks, Nick.

I see Vauxhall are up there.

Just traded in the worst car I have ever owned...an 55 plate Corsa. Dealer was awful, car cost me loads in servicing and MOT failures. Latest service brought up a frayed handbrake cable which means two cables have to be replaced. Enough is enough. It is going.

Best bit is this. The dealer passed the first MOT with the blue sidelights in place...how I purchased it despite their so-called Network Q. Independent garage noticed this, so got them changed for free. Also last MOT, CV joints had to be replaced plus a few bits and pieces that mount up. It's only done 40K.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.
  • As stated in the article, While the rate seems very high for the mondeo and the focus, Alot are purchased as fleet or rep cars, and will cover a hell of a lot more mileage than your average family driver due to wear and tear etc.

Not shocked the frogs are at the top though!

My Mini's had an MOT in January, 2008, 2009, 2010 and its not even had an advisory on anything yet.

I would be interested to see what they do fail on though.

At 3 years old I bet a lot of cars fail on things like bald tyres.

i think that all of these car in the list are some of the most common on our roads means the more of them that are out there then theres more of them to go wrong.

i take statistics like this with a pinch of salt.

my car failed its first MOT on the number plate, hardly a catastrophe but it still counted as a fail.

well no, the number's quoted are percentages so that has no bearing.

Put another way .... a higher percentage of rep-mobiles failed than granny-mobiles. Statistics can prove anything you want them to.

No surprise that Japanese cars are always top in the reliability charts.

so if you sell 10 cars and all are lucky enough to never fail but you sell 10,000 cars and 10 fail then you can make a set of damning statisitcs from that using percentages im sure.
as molerat also says most are common company cars that will do many more miles than cherished personal cars with less miles.

Also many of those that failed could be because of a simple thing like a bulb failure , but would still make it onto the list, whereas the lesser known vehicles could be prone to more expensive failures such as uneven tyre wear(Fiat stilo) suspension arms/ bushes etc. It's hardly conclusive.

True, it isn't conclusive, no survey is, however it all adds to the general picture.

Certainly some of the better known car makers were trying to stop it's publication.
