Possibly redundancy and benefits

I am likely to be made redundant. My self-employed OH has had his work reduced and so will be working about 3 hours a week (until he can find some more). Ideally I want to find another job quickly, but there's not that much on the job sites.

Having looked on entitledto.co.uk, it seems one of us could claim jobseekers. If I claimed contribution based jsa for the 6 months and still couldn't find any work, could I switch or could OH claim the income based one later?

Anyone have any ideas how much we would be likely to get? We are in our 30's, the step kids stay with us 7 nights out of 14 but we don't get child benefit etc as we don't count as the main carers. We have no savings (other than the bit that belongs to the tax man).

What amount of redundancy pay affects jsa? What else could we get?

Just when I thought we were finally reducing all our debts

You will only get jsa of £64 a week.

    Yes we rent.

The direct gov website says jsa is £60 a week for contribution based but that you could get a top up payment of income based jsa?

income based jsa will be dependant on what your OH earns minus a £10 a week disregard.

    Briefly, JSA is paid thusly:

You have a personal rate, this is what JSA(c) will pay you (~£64.00)

If it's a partner claim then you may be entitled to an allowance for your partner, if you are (for example) disabled then you may be entitled to a premium.

JSA(ib) takes into account these extra entitlements and gives you an applicable amount. If the applicable amount exceeds the personal rate then you do, indeed, get a 'top up'
