Is it possible to get a carer's allowance for looking after your own child?

I was talking to someone the other day and they said their young child is classed as disabled because he has severe eczma and the person also gets disability living allowance and a carers allowance. I didn't think it was possible to get a carers allowance for looking after your own child (is it?) and is it possible to also be classed as disabled if you have severe Eczma?

I'm not passing judgment, just wanting to learn, that's all.

Thanks.

The child would need to be receiving mid or high rate care DLA.

It is possible to be classed as disabled if you have eczema - I've had a few bad flare ups. (one of which has totally messed up the skin on my ears)

It wouldn't just be a case of looking after a child - the child would have more needs than one of their own age.

Depends, if the child is in receipt of DLA middle rate care then yes, the mum can claim carers allowance if she looks after him for 35 hours a week and earns less than £95.

It's rare to get that rate of DLA for simple eczema though, the child will probably have other problems or a very severe case that requires wet wrapping or complex home treatments to qualify for it.

yes sorry they are, i assumed the op was about a mum claiming. siblings can also claim if they are over 16 and not in full time education, as could granny or granda if they were under 65
