Council Tax and months to pay........

Basically me and my partner moved into a rented house last saturday (09/01/10). I rang my local council (selby district council) and registered us for council tax.
The lady on the phone was not very clear and I plan to ring back on Monday, but it seemed to me she said we would have to pay extra council tax and not get the 2 months gap Feb and March like everyone else.
Is this right? and why should we pay for Feb and March if nobody else does?
I do plan to ring back but just wanted opinions from others if this is correct and why.

Thank you

People do pay for Feb and March in effect.
Council tax is an annual charge, this charge is spread over 10 months instead of 12.
So it will effect you in the next financial year, april 2010 to March 2011 you will not pay for Feb and March in 2011 because you will have already paid it as part of the preceding 10 monts.

So the lady from the council is correct.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Dizzi, have you already been paying CT for another property?

if not, then the woman will be right.

If you are moving from one address to another and have paid/will pay CT for both, then you will get Feb and March free.

Only if the new property is in the same or a lower band. OP may be due a refund from your previous property

some councils you do actually pay over 12 months rather than the 10.
    it could be that??

or they give you the option of 10/12 months

  • All Local Authorities expect you to pay in ten equal installments from April to January so that they can easily identify and have two calender months to chase those who have not cleared their liability before the next year's Council Tax installment becomes due on the first of April.

Therefore the person at your LA was correct but you should wait for their demand to arrive which will break down your liability by the day from the first day of your occupancy. You might find that they may be agreeable to you making two equal payments as long as they both clear by the 31st of March
