Are these the sort of thing you're looking for?

That's the sort of thing yes. Although I did see a gadget at an Ideal home show or something years ago for washing cars. There was a check valve at the bottom of the hose, so when the hose moved it pulled in water, but didn't let it go. If I could find one of those valves, that may be a cheap way to start.

I used an old hand pump similar to the modern ones suggested by wobbly when I wanted to top up a raised pond from a ground level pond and it worked a treat.
You might find an old original pump on ebay or from a reclamation yard. It will look better than a reproduction pump but will cost more and won't be threaded for pipe fittings. It's not difficult to test an original pump, all you need is a bucket of water. They are very simple in operation and easy to fix since they were designed to last decades in household use.

Thanks for the information about water abstraction. I have a man-made drainage stream under the boudary of my garden that was piped and infilled before I bought the house. I believe the local Council are responsible for it's maintenance, but there is an inspection chamber on my property. Do the rights you quote still apply, and what would happen if a drought order was imposed?

  • Fruitcake, sorry I haven't a clue. I found the info on riparian rights by doing a google. Try it, you might find info specific to your water situation. HTH

I think it's law in some areas that hosepipes must have a non return valve on so that the danger of polluting the water suppy is reduced. I think these fit onto the tap end but I imagine they could easily be fitted 'in line'.

Don't bother with that idea, we bought one of these years ago for washing the car and while it does the job you will be there forever making dodgy hand movements just to fill a bucket. A rotary or piston type hand pump will be far more efficient.
