As I understand it the dvla can sell on your details to certain companies. what details can they sell and are they details from your licence or your vehicle ? My friend wants to change the details on her licence but does not want the new information to be sold . (violent marriage/he due out of prison ) . she has a company vehicle so that isnt an issue its her new details on her licence that worry her ?any clarification appreciated

The DVLA will sell details of the registered keeper to any applicant who can show "reasonable cause". They claim the £2,50 fee is to cover administrative costs. I don't think so!
"Reasonable Cause" examples are given on the DVLA website and most regretfully include for issuing private parking tickets.
52 companies currently have access to the database via electronic link. Many of them private PCN issuers who only have to be a British Parking Association "Approved Operator"
I am currently in contact with my MP regarding this unsatisfactory state of affairs.
Just anecdotally I applied for information after my parked car had been struck by another vehicle, which made off. The DVLA sent me details of my own cars' RK-me. When I complained they sent me details of me again.
When I set the complaints procedure in motion they finally sent the details I had requested. Sorry I digress.0 -
If you have a look at the DVLA website they wax lyrical about how them disclosing the details makes you safer and improves your driving enjoyment...0

I came to this thread expecting another general moan.
But OP I think you raise a very valid point and your MP might be a good place to start. What about these agencies that help people in your friend's situation can they not suggest who to contact.
My only advice would be for your friend to ensure her ex doesn't get hold of her reg number and that should at least make things trickier.0 -
She should also check with the electoral roll, there are 2 lists if she is on the standard list (default one) for a few £ she could be found on a website like 192.com.0

or could be found on UK INFO0

OP - your friend can request that her information not be given out to anyone other than relevant authorities or when an offence has been committed due to her circumstances. DVLA will consider her request but it is not guaranteed. If she has any proof of her circumstances eg letter from police officer or similar then this will help.
She will need to write to DVLA marking the letter for attention of 'Systems Audit'. If it is authorised then no-one can access her details apart from police and this actual dept.
