I got slated in another part of MSE for making a comment about this situation if I cared so much I should post it on the Charities Board. Until the recent Haiti Earthquake I had never heard of this happening. I just happened to see a story about it on the news. Thanks to other posters for the link.

. Wouldn't it be nice if for one week those who can afford to buy them did without our little treats like crips, sweets' biscuits and cakes and gave a little donation to any of the charities involved in Food Aid Programmes.

A very interesting article, and speaking as one who has also come in touch with some of the less kind folks on here (and isn't it great they are in the minority) I'll just say good for you for posting it.
Reading some of the comments from people who think that the Haitian people should calmly stand in line whilst aid is dished out, this article, this clarity of the lives some (many) people were already living before the earthquake puts some of the desperation into greater clarity.
So, yes, those who could donate must donate
