Barclays bank Account?

Options
My hubby applied online for a Barclay's bank account, anyway, he got a letter to say an account had been opened for him
He didn't ask for an overdraft (I insisted he didn't) So he's got the debit card, cheque book and internet banking, but I've noticed that the debit card they have sent him is a ''Full authorisation'' card?
I know Barclay's have 2 debit cards with 2 different bin numbers and his starts: 4658 do you think it's because he didn't request an overdraft?

He doesn't seem that bothered but me just wondering!

I have two barclays Cash Card accounts with VISA debit cards both starting 4658. Don't know what that means or if it helps, but I've never had a problem...

    I don't think that's the reason.

    Your husband got a chequebook.

The card will work fine in anywhere that accepts Visa, no matter if it's a full authorisation or non-full authorisation card.

4659 is the non-full authorisation card, which comes with a cheque guarantee.

Thanks for replies, the only thing with it being a full authorisation card, it wouldn't work say on a train because they can't authorise it?
Plus I thought if they opened a full account with a cheque book it came with the cheque card? I guess best thing would be to ask them! The debit card looks almost identical to my co op cashminder debit card too.

How do you know its a full authorisation card? If it gets declined on the train he could open up a credit card and clear it in full each month. My OH uses a capital one classic card for train tickets each month and clears it in full.

If he has bad credit Cap1 Classic or Vanquis could still be OK :)

It's the first few digits that tell you or it may have the cheque guarantee sign on the back. So 4658 means it has to get authorisation before you can buy with it.
The other is the 4659 as book mentions, you could use that on a plane for instance where funds can't be checked:D

There might not be a cheque guarentee function on the debit card, as maybe banks are trying to phase it out.

As you may know in 2011, cheque guarentee will be gone.

That's interesting - because one of my friends has a Lloyds TSB Cash Card account with the blue full-auth visa debit from them.

She can't use it in Tesco Metro in town, or the Black Horse pub, but my (apparently full auth) Connect card from Barclays works fine in those places... despite them both using a floor limit

  • that's odd my card is 4539 and has a cq of £50

Go into branch and tell them that the wrong card was odered. It should be a Connect card (i.e. offline debit card - starts with 4659), instead of the Connect (Electronic) card (i.e. full authorisation card - starts with 4658). After they do this, ask them to show you on the screen. It will say 'Connect' as the type of card.

According to the brochure I have here, that account comes with an offline debit card (the 4659 one. It doesn't explicitly say that though). This card comes with a cheque guarentee (£50 or £100) and a contactless facility. The 4658 cards don't.
