Who is responsible for notifying old company when I transfer?

Hello

I had a letter from Ovo telling me that they would start supplying me with dual fuel as from 31/12/09. When I phoned them to give them the meter readings, I was told that I wouldn't need to tell my old suppliers as Ovo would do that.

I had a letter from the old gas supplier asking me to call them to ensure a smooth changeover, but I ignored the letter because of what Ovo told me. I was never contacted by the old electricity supplier.

My bank statement shows that I am paying by direct debit to all three companies, and I am worrying about what to do.

Was Ovo's advice correct and can I recover my payments from my old suppliers?

Many thanks.

    Ovo's advice was correct.

Any money you have overpaid to your old company will be refunded. However you need to see a final bill from your old company to find out the exact position on your account.

Ensure that the final meter reading is the same as the start reading with Ovo

I'm much obliged to you, Cardew, and very much admire the sterling advice you give to others on this site.

Should I put the ball entirely in Ovo's hands (I wonder how competent they are), or also contact the old companies?

Make sure you get a final bill and keep it just in case. Sometimes energy companies can come back chasing for money
