I have a couple of gaps in my N I C for a couple of years back.

I know I only need 30 years to receive full old age pension and i have another 30 years to make up the remaining 15 years, however how long back can you back date NIC payments if someone did want to make up years where full payments have not been paid ?

This situation could come about where people want to get the full 30 years under their belt early so they can live abroad etc for a few years without worrying about missing years.

Also what happens to people who have not got the full 30 years payments ,would they get any sort of benefits once they reach retirement age ?

  • you can pay missing n.i years,in fact they have just wrote to mrs w asking if she wants to buy 2 years shes missed,if you dont have the full 30 years you wont get a full pension. But if you have 30 years to make up 15 i really wouldnt worry life really is too short

Deadlines for making up a NICs shortfall

You usually have to make up the shortfall within six years from the end of the tax year for which they are being paid - and you can do this even if you've already reached State Pension age.

For example, voluntary Class 3 NICs for the 2008-09 year have to be paid by 5 April 2015. But the rate may increase if you pay more than two years after the end of the relevant tax year.

However there are some exceptions, as described below.
Voluntary Class 3 NICs for the tax years 1996-97 to 2001-02

For the 1996-97 to 2001-02 years there are special extended limits which mean you can still pay Class 3 NICs for all those years - and at the original rate relevant for that year - provided you pay by:

    * 5 April 2009 if you reached State Pension age on or after 24 October 2004
    * 5 April 2010 if you reached State Pension age before 24 October 2004

So is that only for people who have already reached state pension age ?

I'm sorry, I know I'm being particularly stupid and I'm not helping, but this is really, really bugging me because I don't understand what it means.

I can't get my ahead around it. I wouldn't have asked but others seem to understand and I don't like being stupid (and admitting being stupid can be a remedy for being stupid :) )

You need 30 full NIC years before you reach SPA to receive full State pension ,I am due to reach that in 30 years time and I have 15 years paid up already ,so I need to pay another 15 years out of the next 30 years.
    I hope that explains it.
