    Absolutely valid question.

All questions are easy if you know the answer - but everyones experiences and education has been very different.

There is no mileage in posting 'silly question' type comments, it isn't helpful and is quite rude.

Anyway, I would have no problems answering the question 'what is the difference between an apple and a grape' if the person in question had never had the opportunity to see and try these things, and only hear about them. If lewt had watchd Jamie's School Dinners, s/he would have been very surprised at some of the items the kids didn't know.... apples and grapes might not be such a foolish question for someone that hasn't been made aware of fresh produce.

I don't know exactly what I used to think paprika was 'made' of, but I didn't know before that it was from capsicum peppers!! I knew chilli was hotter but thought paprika totally different altogether.... So a thanks from 'silly' me, for a clever question!

I used to work in the food industry and for a while we used to list chilli powder and cayenne powder separately on the ingredient list only to find out later from our supplier that they were the same (cayenne does tend to be hot and is from a specific type of chilli whereas chilli powder can be a blend and can be milder or in fact hotter than cayenne)...I think.

thanks for that. for years I've been using chilli powder when my Madhur Jaffrey recipes ask for cayenne & have often wondered if it makes any difference, it's good to know it doesn't :)

Best way to look for this is by the number of 'L's in chilli. If there's one (Chili) it isn't blended, if two (Chilli) then the chilli powder itself is. I recently discovered that there's nearly always added cumin, garlic etc

You can buy chilli powder in various degrees of strength....mild, medium and hot. I usually buy hot and use less if I want a milder taste. I've convinced myself that it is moneysaving that way.

don't know about the 'ls' thing  anything I've ever bought in this country (Britain) has been just ground chillies

but, American chilli powder is often a mixture of chilli powder, cummin powder & oregano ... which I found out the hard way many years ago!
