Chili powder's hotter and more intensely firy, while paprika's earthier and sweeter, and not as hot. If you can, try spanish sweet (smoked) paprika, which has a lovely smoky intense (but still not spicy-hot) flavour. As it's smoky, you don't need to use as much. It's also called pimenton, and you can usually buy it in delis and spanish grocers, and also in sainsbury's, and you want dulce (sweet) not picante (spicy).

They taste different for a start.
Paprika comes from a capiscum pepper, not exactly sure which, but more of your milder bell pepper - there are different varieties.
Chilli powder can come from loads of different kinds of chilli peppers. These can range from mild to searingly hot, and not a clue as to what they use in your average chilli powder - I'm more of a dried chilli user myself.
Basically chilli powder is hotter than paprika.

No need to be cruel ......... a question was asked as the answer wasn't known. Wish I knew everything myself, but don't - that's why I come here to get help.........and if I can help in any small way in return, that's ok with me.

Am dreading seeing DD's name on this forum, she is definitely not mine! Tried to teach her all sorts of things, and she won't listen - however, one day she will be on here - and I will change my name and give her advice - like you should have listened to your mother! :rotfl:

    Hi lewt,

rabialiones asked a perfectly valid question to help her save money. Please remember what Martin says on the top of every page on the MSE chat forums:

"Remember there's no such thing as a stupid question, pls be nice to all MoneySavers!"

An extremely valid question in my view, it's just a shame that some people can't just be nice and answer the question:mad: No-one knows everything, that is why we're all here, to help eachother :D

hi rabialiones, good question :) & definitely one better asked before cooking with them than after!

it's quite handy to keep both in the kitchen cupboard, clearly labelled though!

apart from their separate uses, when I'm making say a chilli & I know I'm having people round who don't like their food too hot, I'll replace some of my usual amount of chilli powder with paprika, so I get the same depth of pepper-y flavour without the heat
