Definition of being Single - a 2nd class citizen who gets fleeced !!

I am trying to book a holiday in the UK; why is being single such a problem ?
I don't understand why a single room doesn't cost half the price of a double room - it was designed for 1 and that's all that you can get in it
Some examples (picked at random)
Paragon Hotel Birmingham - single room £65 double dual occupancy £80
Thistle Birmingham City - single room £150 double dual occupancy £160
Ramada Birmingham - single room £120 double dual occupancy £120
Most of the time a single room is the size of a shoebox and is in the worst location in the building - no views (unless you count the kitchen, fire escape etc), nearest a main road, furthest from the lift etc
Whilst I would expect to pay a supplement for occupancy of a room designed for 2 or more, even then I'm being fleeced i.e. the most I should expect to have to pay is the standard cost less the cost of 1 breakfast - I'm sure they would object if I tried to eat 2 breakfasts !
Please don't even get me started on single supplements for package holidays
Does anyone know any UK hotels / b&bs / accommodation web sites where they take a fairer view ?
We keep being told that there are more single people in this country than ever before; there are pressure groups / web sites campaigning against racialism, sexism, ageism etc - in fact these 'isms' are all illegal
Does anyone know any web sites / campaigns trying to address the 'single' issue especially relating to finance ?

OK, have a good rant! ( but it's a waste of time, because that's the way it is ) !
What you need is a partner, or get a bunk in an hostel!
Actually, hostels are very good. ( at least in europe). Why don't you check out https://www.virtualtourist.com for single accommodation. (they have hotels AND hostels).0 -
Aagh! I completely understand your rant and agree. Slightly off topic but I know of some tavel comapnies that do not penalise you for travelling alone- Im going away on a tour with https://www.geckosadventures.com this year, and also https://www.wild-in-scotland.com, but I suppose that only helps if you want to do an organised tour.0

hi djl, thanks for the tip  - I agree B&Bs are cheaper (and often more friendly) but the same applies to them re what they charge for a single versus a double
Thanks sheep650 -

Hey, cheer up, it's a lovely day! It's hardly your neighbours' fault that you're self-employed and choose to work Saturdays. Hope you're back in time for the football

Hi
the other thing that gets me is the offers where you pay one entry and get one free ie to gardens, stately homes, etc. penalises single people on their own - why can't we have hallf price entry ?

I know exactly what you mean but it's not the case that single people are being penalised. It's just that couples are not getting a deal. Be happy for them instead of sad for yourself and you'll feel betteranne15 wrote:Hi

You're right about the breakfasts.
But otherwise it takes nearly as much time and money to clean and prep a single room as it does a double. You take up nearly as much space in the car park and probably use just as many bottles of shampoo.
But getting back to the point, if you can cope with the relative lack of luxury, hostels are a good way to save money and meet people at the same time. If you can afford a hotel then just find a slightly cheaper hotel and forget about it. Or have a double bed all to yourself with nobody to hog the duvet...
