Last night I was nosing around on eBay whilst watching Emmerdale & I saw a bag like one I had been looking for for ages, I'd been looking for the River Island version, but this one is the spitting image of it for a 3rd of the price, so I was more than happy to go for it!
It was BIN so I clicked through and went for it. However, as anyone who was watching Emmerdale last night knows, there was a lot going on on the TV so I wasn't paying 100% attention to what I was doing and as I hit the final 'pay now' button I noticed out of the corner of my eye that there was a number '15' at my address, which is my old address!!
The night before I had been deleting an expired credit card that was still registered at my old address from Paypal and it must have defaulted to my old address or something? (Thats the only reason I can think of that it would suddenly bring up my old address?)
So I immediately messaged the seller, through eBay, saying:
"Aargh!!! I was too busy watching Emmerdale and wasn't paying attention to what I was doing when I was paying for this, but I'm sure out of the corner of my eye I saw my old address?? If the address it tells you to send it to is 15 St Andrews Street would it be possible for you to refund the money and I can repay and select the right address? I still had a credit card attached to my old address and I was trying to delete it last night, I must have changed the address or something by mistake?? Please let me know asap as if it goes to my old address I'll not get it
("
The seller replied saying:
"hi there, yes the address shows 15 st andrews street, but if you just send the address you want the bag to be sent to ill post it there, if you like, regards kala"
I didn't think that sounded right so I replied with:
"Ok, well it's up to you I guess, but that would cause problems if it went missing in the post or something (because you didn't send it to the paypal address). My current address is ****. It's my own fault for being so caught up in Emmerdale!! lol"
& she came back with:
"hi , i understand now, but its just that with you paying, i dont know how i can send you another invoice, i will post to the new address you have sent me, and it will be sent recorded post to be signed for , hope thats ok, kind regards kala"
You hear so much about accounts being hacked etc, so I don't understand why she'd be happy to just send it to another address? If there was a problem would there be a comeback on me? ie - say I didn't get it would I still be able to ask for a refund?
She has 1400+ feedback, so you'd think she'd be more aware of these things? Would anyone else have gone this way if they were in this situation?

Could just be she's nice. It won't disadvantage you if it goes missing. It'll disadvantage the seller.0

Yeah, I appreciate what she's done & she does come across as nice, but why put yourself in that position? If I was a scammer she would have just played into my hands and lost £20?.•

I think it's pretty easy to tell from the message you sent her that you aren't a scammer- if you were you probably wouldn't be suggesting that she refund and you resend payment. I think it's generally pretty easy to tell as a seller who to be wary of, and who has just made a genuine mistake0

As I don;t use tracking anyway I am usually happy to send it to a different address to that shown on paypal, as long as the buyer 'feels' right.
I probably would have just sent it to you as well.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Sometimes you gotta have a wee bit of trust in people. I would have sent to your other address too.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

lol ok then, just me getting worried on her behalf!
I have to admit though, if I was the seller I would have gone down the refund-repay route. I'm obviously not as trusting as what I think I am!!

Nigerian scammers probably don't tend to mention Emmerdale in their correspondence, thus making you appear instantly geniune.0

I'd do the same as the seller. I would do some sanity checks first e.g. the alternate address is still in the UK (e.g. not Nigeria) and not some PO box - then I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would find it more awkward if the seller showed no trust - kinda like that feeling when you go through immigration/customs and get eyeballed and questioned even though you know you've done nothing wrong!
Think of it this way, if it was an attempt at fraud, you would have given the police your own address!0 -
As others have said if your not sending tracked its no problem anyway. 99% of buyers are generally honest. You can normally guess most problematic transactions by the communications so yes I would have done the same0
