JSA until university starts?

Situation is: I have a 2 year old son, partner is claiming JSA. I am a full time university student in final year. In september i am applying for a postgraduate nursing degree but when i graduate in june i will have no other income than child tax credits, child benefit and partners JSA. If i get on to the course i will be starting in April or September 2011. Will i be able to claim JSA during this time while looking for a temporary job even though i will not be looking for anything permanent?
Thanks:)

To satisfy the jsa conditions you need to be activly seeking full time employment so no

This doesn't seem fair as if both people in a couple are full time students who have the responsibility of a child they can clain JSA during the summer break even if any job they will get will not be a permanent one. Myself and my partner never did this when we were both students at the same time but i know we could have. I would never claim benefits if i had another option. So it's either break up with my partner and claim income support for the next 10 years or don't continue my education. Will not be doing either thanks to whoever made the rules lol.

That is incorrect. The OP will be seeking full time employment, albeit of a temporary nature. Therefore they are entitled to claim JSA.

I was on the understanding that as a student you couldnt claim JSA no matter what time of the year it was???

I will be finishing one course and possibly taking a year break not a holiday with the intention of finding a job and saving up some money to keep me in another 2 years of full time education. I will not be classed as a student as i will not be enrolled on a course at the time.

You can claim JSA if you are in between courses.

  • Your partner will be able to 'add' you to his claim-you would not have to be available for work as you have a child. However, you will have to check when the 'official' end date for your course is with your university as you would not be able to amend the claim until then. The official end date is often after you have stopped attending the course!
