Our car at 56000 miles so would need to think about changing timing belt - think recommended at 60000. Can anyone give me a rough idea what I should expect to pay for replacing??
Many thanks,

Diesels are 40, 60 or 80k depending which handbook you have, which dealer ytou speak to and which mileage VW have decided on today!

About £400 at a dealer. Get the water pump replaced at the same time.

i'll second this, its always good practise to do this on any car, but these vw pumps are terrible!

You have the same engine i have in may van - its 4 years or 60k. Take it to a good vw independent and make sure they buy the kit from vw

The timing belt kit inc pulleys was about £80 and the water pump was about £40 - total inc labour was £250

My mechanic told me a new belt puts more pressure on the old water pump and can lead to failure - vw recommend it as will most good garages

As you have a 2004 you should have done it 2 years ago

its not really about pressure on the pump, its just that the pump has a limited life,on these its very limited.
we fit vw belts, but we fit an after market pump from gsf, its no better or worse than the vw ones, infact we haven't had one fail within the service life advised, but we have had vw pump fail within thier life and the gsf ones are cheaper.

Just read manual and it says to get 'checked' at 60000 and replaced at 80000 - maybe best getting it changed anyway with reading what you have all said above.

  • I think the thing when doing a cambelt is belt pulleys and pump, Afterall, How much of a tit would you feel for paying for the belt to be replaced and then the pump going and knackering it all up or the pulleys etc.

my focus is recommended to be done at 100,000 miles or 5 year, it was done at 50,000 and only 4 years old though just to be sure.
