Call the council they usually have their own teams for dealing with blocked drains so it wont cost anything like dyno rod would charge. If its not your fault why should you have to spend the time clearing the mess up. If the council decide they may fine your neighbour for it. As already mentioned take photos to back up your claim.

Pipkin I agree with Floss2 above. Tell the council, don't attempt to do anything, you could make it worse and then be to blame as well!

They will send someone to clear it for you, tell them the drain is causing an ice and flooding hazard as the snow is now thawing and there is rain forcast everywhere tomorrow.

They will probably clear it with caustic soda, like extra strong washing soda, (don't cause yourself any risk by handling this chemical) which will dissolve the grease blockage, if you have any further problems call them back, rather than attempt it yourself.

I do it all the time to my own drain.. I squirt washing up liquid down the boiling water and run the hot tap for a while.. clears inno time.. mine is usually from cooking sausages or similar so not massive quantities.

I'm too scared of using caustic soda

I always do our drains with soda crystals, never seem to have a problem, they shift grease well x

On the other hand, she might just actually see that I'm not complaining for the sake of it, and realise that this could cause problems, especially if we have the predicted downpour this weekend.

Well the other very good reason for speaking to her about it is that you don't want her doing it again, eek! And if she doesn't realise what a nasty mess she's made of the drain she probably will do it again.

Fat must NEVER be poured down the drain, it needs to be scraped into the bin! Thames Water did a big campaign about this!

When hot water's poured down the drain, yes it moves it, but as soon as the water cools it solidifies again and the problem has simply moved a bit further down the network!

Better still, use the fat to make up some birdfeed!

if you fancy rodding it and you're near a home bargains they sell drain rods.

personally i would ring the council if it's going to be no cost to you

what stupid person puts stuff like that down a drain?

Different drains, Barneysmom, although they may well meet underground

This one has the gutter pipe coming off the roof and down into it.

Oh, I am sorry about that, how daft of me?

it might be worth a call to your local water company just for advice - often they can be very helpful over the phone - after all - water companies have to spend a huge amount of money sorting out fat in the system. If the council have to be called out (or if they then have to call the water company out) will they try and charge the 'offending' tenant? If so, and if the other tenant might try and blame you, can you be sure this won't end up in an 'she did it, no, she did it' situation?
