Is First Aid a qualifaction or a skill?!?!?!

Hi sorry if this is a REALLY stupid question...just filling out an application form and can't decide whether 'First Aid in the Workplace' would classed as a qualification or a skill:confused:

I think I may be having a numpty moment and am leaning more towards skill but clarification would be very helpful:D:D

Can't have my prospective employers thinking I'm an idiot...although after this post I'm sure I'll get a few comments from you lot:p:rotfl:

TIA x

It is a qualification, you go on a course and get a certificate.

But it's only a qualification if you last did the course within 24 months - as the qual expires after that period of time!

If there is a qualification at the end of it, a certificate, status etc, then it's a qualification.

With first aid you have to re-take it I believe inorder to keep "status" therefore I would say after that period has expired, it would be a skill.
  • wow! Thanks for the quick replies:D and no sarky comments, you lot are much nicer than some of the the other boards:D:rotfl:

I do have a certificate, it doesn't expire until Dec 2011 so looks like I have an extra qualification:j:jFor now:)

    Thanks xx

Nope. It lasts three years. The original course is four days. If one takes a re-qualification within the three years, it is only two days. I'm on one this coming Monday as I gained the original April 2007. If I wait until after my three years are up, I would have to do the four day course again.

No you wouldn't - the new course is 3 days long, as of 1st October 2009.

I've been on the course three times over the years ... got the certificate each time, but invariably I missed quite a bit of the course as I would just pass out the minute they mentioned blood ... and in one case all he did to make me pass out was take out the resusci-annie dummy out of the suitcase!

I'd be useless, but sometimes you get bullied into going on these things.

My stepdad and his colleagues grudgingly attended a first aid course a few years ago. Afterwards, they were chatting and joking about what they had to do to "Recussi-Annie". My mum overheard (or underheard!), and flew into a rage, assuming that "Annie" was some floozy he'd been eyeing up :)

not all courses will be 3 days. this is the minimum. Some employers choose to do a longer more detailed course.

    but, qualification, yes.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.

Apologies yup its 36 months for HSE First Aid at Work.

Its 24 months for Emergency First Response (which I was preping lesson plans for this afternoon) need to teach one of each in the next 12 months to keep both quals current. :o
