Credit Card Protection payment

OH has a Natwest Business Card. Since 2005 he has been charged a yearly payment by direct debit for card protection. He cannot recall signing or agreeing to this direct debit.
He wrote to Natwest cancelling direct debit in February 2009 but direct debit of £35 was still taken in July 2009 - have written to them requesting refund. Anything I can do about previous payments from 2005?

Read the article about reclaiming PPI in the "Reclaim £1,000s" tab at the top of page and challenge them."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0

I would suggest sending important letters by recorded delivery, for the sake of 75p.
Otherwise the receiver can just say they didn't get it.
It a nuisance having to pay, but it's not a cost that you have to bear too often.
I probably use it 3 or 4 times a year, but it's worth it to make sure that nothing important ever gets lost.0 -
Err - £35 a year is very unlikely to be PPI (far too cheap!).
It's more likely to be insurance against losing your cards - search CPP or Sentinel for more info. These are annual subscriptions that re-renew automatically & completely different to payment protection insurance (which tends to be a monthly payment)
So the PPI letter is probably not much use to you, I'm afraid - and it's usually a contract with the provider (CPP or Sentinel) rather than the bank, so the bank should tell you who it's with then you could try to speak to them about a refund.0 -
Yes it is an annual payment for insurance against losing cards - so have now written to NatWest querying this charge on their Mastercard; as said previously OH cannot recall ever agreeing to this so have asked for proof
Thanks for help0 -
He should have cancelled the insurance, not the Direct Debit (or better - as well as).
And if it's Mastercard, it's not a direct debit anyway - it's a continuing payment authority. It cannot be cancelled with the bank - only with the originator.
If it was Sentinel, their normal habit is to send out annual letters asking for updates on the cards covered? Did these never arrive?
There's a possibility he signed up for it for an initial free year before 2005 and didn't cancel when the year was up.0 -
It's been set up as a direct debit and we have never received any communication as to how or why this was set up - hence asking Natwest for explanation
When we sent original letter to Natwest cancelling direct debit in February 2009 also sent copy to Natwest Card Protection - but obviously neither of them acted upon this
Thanks for info though0
