New bathroom ceiling

Options
The bathroom ceiling is cracking and falling to bits.

It needs to be replace. The house was built in 1978.

Should I have tested to see if it contains asbestos. As I have read that it was used in things like artex ceilings.

As I have phobia about things like that. I know that I am going to have to pay big to have it done properly.

I know I can't tell just by looking at it. And it is going to be judgement call from me.

Is it worth paying the money for the test in the first place.

Funny you should say that I have seen a certain local firm who deal with asbestos removal in the area on the odd occasion even with a property a couple of doors up the road from me.

But I have no idea what they where removing or why.

It might not be a lot of asbestos in but it can be harmful even in small amounts. Think of wives who have died from asbestois (sp?)just from handling their husbands overalls to put them in the washing the machine.

That is what I thought of doing.

And even a small amount of abestos is dangerous. So really did not want to mess about with it.

If I were you I would get someone in just to be on the safe side.
Why would your bathroom ceiling have asbestos in it though?
Are you saying that it is in the artex? I'm no expert but I would doubt it, more than likely to be lead based perhaps? Thats only really dangerous to pregnant ladies.

Just get a builder in to pull dpwn the old plasterboard then put new board up then replaster. To be fair it shouldn't take that long at all to do.

Seems you don't know much about abestos and what it was used for. It was used in building materials in houses from 1950's until the 1980's.

And was put in things such as artex, lino floor tiles and even artificial slates according the site below.

    http://www.lhc.org.uk/members/pubs/factsht/56fact.htm

Also it was used for cold water tanks  even though it was bonded with cement.

My house was built in 1978 and I would rather be safe than sorry even if it has minimum risk.

Thanks paulc8704 at last someone who does not think I am blowing it out of proportion. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Any chance you could PM me rough prices for test as well as what offical bodies the testers and if needed removers should belong to.

    Thanks again.
