Halifax Hidden Charges

Halifax have charged me several times but these have never shown on my statement - their advisor says they can see them on their system! These hidden payments have caused me to go overdrawn several times and incur even more charges - unseen! Advisers talk around in circles and despite several long calls I have got nowhere - I am a student and have no funds - help waht can I do?

    They arent notifying you of charges or showing them on your statements ? Thats bloody ridiculous how on earth are you meant ot budget and account for them.

    What are the charges for ?

    I think you need to do a full Subject Access Request on the bank to get everything they hold on you, will get you a letter copy.

    Also the bank, if you go into the branch, should be able to give you a print out of your transactions and charges for the last couple months.

    FULL NAME : FULL ADDRESS : POSTCODE
    Any past names/addresses

    Account numbers (if you know them)

    1. I formally request that you forward me a true record of any Data held by your organisation relating to myself for any and all accounts held currently or in the past with your company. This should include, but not be limited to all transaction lists, agreements, terms and conditions applicable to any accounts held with you, full lists of all charges applied to any accounts held with you and so on.
    2. This request should include any Data held for more than 6 years as under the Data Protection Act there is no time limit for information requested.
    3. If you do not hold Data for a period longer than 6 years I also request confirmation of this in writing along with your methods used for disposal of such information to comply with the Data Protection Act stating the name and contact information of your registered Data Controller and Code Compliance Officer.
    I enclose the statutory maximum fee of £10. You have 40 days from receipt of this request in which to return to me the information requested , securely and in legible condition.

    Please note that the above address is the one registered with your organisation and which you have previously found to be acceptable.

    How on earth can a bank make a charge, deduct it from your account and not show it on your statement? :confused:

    If that were to happen, the statement wouldn't add up. There would be money missing that is not explained.

  • The only bit I would add to Premier's post is: have you looked through your statement for the period which the advisor has stated a charge will be taken ie beginning of the month or end of the month?
    Furthermore, do you pay a lot of cheques into your account because the balance might show as in credit but the uncleared balance may be either negative or lower which might explain if a charge had been taken.

    When you go over your overdraft the colours on statements are still Black and White.
    It would be designed for those that ARE colour blind since they would see BLACK and WHITE.

    Interesting if they did do that though ;)

    I am confused by the original post, never shown on the statement as in you weren't notified or as in they were not applied to the account?

    It may be that the charges are going to be notified on the next statement, if they were incurred recently.

    Or could it be the new 'simplified' charging structure from Halifax. Its dead simple if you are in your overdraft often it will cost you a lot more. If you go in for one day by £1 the interest rate would be several thousand per cent.

    I didn't think this applied to students though. If you have a regular account then I guess it would. However if these are the charges you refer to I would advise the bank you do not accept the new terms. They won't accept this which is quite a strange legal position to take...

    If they didnt appear on the statement then how did the balance drop? The statement is a list of debits and credits and the current balance is the running total.

    If there was no debit to the account, then the balance could not have dropped.

    If the charges are new, then these may not yet be applied to the account. So, the bank clerk can see what you have accrued but they may not be levied until a date in the future. This gives you a chance to be notified in advance (usually via the statement). However, that delay is typically only up to 1 month.
