Vehicle Inspection

My daughter wants to buy a second hand car from a dealer. It has just been resprayed and looks great.
Why was it resprayed, how long will the paint stay on, what if anything is being hidden.
Which companies carry out inspections of cars prior to purchase and what is the likely cost. Feel it will be a good investment.

What sort of car is it?

I would be very wary of anything with a new spray job.

Ask the dealer why it has needed to be resprayed.

The respray could be hiding almost anything, filler etc.

Personally I would buy a car in as near to original condition as possible.
  • RAC do vehicle inspection http://www.rac.co.uk/products-services/vehicle-inspections/ if your serious about buying you can pay the £149.00 for the inspection and includes data check also just a data check (hpi) £14.99.

what vehicle is it what year etc.

many cars get resprayed it may not be hideing anything might of just been faided paint and the garage has honoured the paint warenty on it.

I totally agree especially if it's a reasonably new car, but if it's a classic car that's different and to be expected.

A respray wouldn't put me off but it would make me wary and I would give the car a good going over. Atleast the dealer has told you its been resprayed, he could have told you its just in excellent condition and you wouldn't have been any wiser.
If your spending a few K on the car I woud get it inspected by the RAC/AA for the peace of mind. At the very least get a mechanic friend to give it a once over.
You can also look at obvious signs of repair yourself first to see if its worth even getting it inspected. Some tell tales signs will tell you if its had panels replaced, also check the boot floorpan for signs there of rear end damage and again in the bonnet area.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Don't get paranoid over a bit of paint. If its HPI clear and it looks the part and you ask if it has been crashed or bashed and get a negative answer (in front of a witness) don't worry.
Where do all those rows of shiney second-hand cars on the forecourt come from? Their not like that from new otherwise supermarket car parks would look the same.
Hard pre-sale prep, which might involve valeting, smart repairs or something more extensive are all part of making us happy with our second hand deal.

Appreciate your comments. I have seen a company advertised called InspectAcar who will carry out a full inspection similar to the AA/RAC. Has anyone heard of them and what was the opinion of their inspections.

Actually freshly resprayed classic cars are an absolute minefield unless you have detailed photographs of what has been done.
