Replacing oil sump - Toyota Yaris

The oil sump on my 2001 Toyota Yaris is corroded it seems. I've had a look online and it seems that the part itself is fairly cheap (c. £50 - rare for a Toyota!) but I was wondering if anyone might have any idea about the amount of work/time involved in fitting a new one so I can make a reasonable guess on costs? I assume the sump is somewhere near the bottom of the engine, just hoping it's not a case of hours of work trying to get close to it! I am aware that it is an essential repair and I'll be getting it done ASAP, but forewarned is forearmed.

Thanks in advance.

Seems strange for a sump of that age to be corroded. Who says it's corroded and is it leaking oil?

It should be a relatively easy job to do. Drain oil, remove all sump bolts, fit new gasket and sump. Fill with oil.
  • I took it to my usual mechanic to sort something else and he mentioned it then as I had noticed oil leaking and it was mentioned again separately by the guys that did my MOT. Neither of them pitched for the work when telling me, as they said it was not hugely urgent, but two independent mechanics mentioning it makes me think it definitely is! It's leaking a small amount of oil at the moment.

Cheers for the info. I wonder why it's corroding if, as you say, it's unusual for a car of that age?

Try asking jeannieblue on here as she works at a Toyota specialist, I believe.

I think it's fair enough to wonder whether its a ten minute job or a four hour taking the engine out kind of job, given the difference in labour costs between the two types. As I said, it's an essential but non-urgent repair (as advised by two different mechanics who mentioned it in passing when doing other work on my car) - if it's a ten-minute cheap job then I'll get it sorted straight away but if it's more complicated I'll wait till February when I'm not living in a 6-week wage month.

Thanks for the tip about jeannieblue.

[My first paragraph no longer makes sense since you edited your post, however I will leave it in case anyone else is wondering why I don't just take it to a mechanic and ask]

i dont think the corrosion is causing the leak more likely to be the sump gasget.

the sump is like a bowl on the bottom of the engine for the oil.

it's not a huge amount of work involved to take off. i would estimate at about hour to hour and a half the longest part waiting for the oil to drain. sumps are usualy thick in meterial so i doubt very much that corrosion would cause a hole so soon in its life for it to leak. i would edge the bet its just the gasget and even to replace the gasget you need to remove the sump any how. or you could try useing gasget sealer and try and seal the leak. rather spending 50 or so replaceing the sump itself and the gasget.
if the leak is from the sump plug (oil drain bolt) then either its too loose or the washer has has its day go to toyota dealer and ask for a new sump plug. couple of quid. if people is mentioning that the sump is rusty and corroded wire wool or wire brush the sump and paint it with hamerite (black) paint will stop the comments being carefull not to apply too much around the sump bolt.
  • Hi Atrix - many thanks for your response. Very strange that two mechanics have said it's the sump - I've looked up pictures and as you say it looks like too thick a material to have corroded in 9 years! I have the advisory notice which mentions it from my MOT in the car so I'll have a look at lunchtime and see what it says exactly.

Looking at this, it seems work in that area is pretty simple (not for me, but my rather handy with cars friend could probably do it), or is this something I should really get a mechanic to do?

Not being particularly savvy with engine parts, I think I've found the part you're talking about - does this look like the right thing for replacing the gasket?
  • ok your first link is changing the oil but as you can see from the photo of the stream of oil pouring out that is the sump and the plug in wich he changes the washer. the second link is to a rocker cover gasget in wich is not the part you need i cant find a pic of it but if you call any motor factor they will give you price and will give you the part you need. would be handy if you could get a photo of the underneath of your car's engine and post hear for me to look at it. the sumps made of steal so i cant see it corroding through so quickly. i would in any case buy some sealer and try and stop the leak itself from the gasket and then wire brush it down and give a coat of hamerite paint to it.
  • Yeah, sorry, I meant to say that the link was to an oil change - I just meant that work in the area looks fairly simple as it looks quite accessible from those pictures.

I'll what I can do about taking a picture. Thanks again for your help!
