Does the engine sound like its trying to spin as fast as before? (i.e not a chug chug)

Get a local, recommended, garage to take a look, scan it and properly diagnose the fault. Scandalous that the patrol jumped to the conclusion that because you had spent so much time spinning the car over that the starter was the root problem.

Well presumably the starter motor was burnt out before and hence, not turning it over, so the patrol identified a problem not the cause, there's nothing wrong with that IMHO.

Now we have the OP saying it is turning over (as if to say it wasn't before).

Did you get the one from the scrap yard ? Is it a diesel ? if the answer is yes to both wouldnt surprise me if they stuck on a slightly lazy starter motor

In my opinion starter motors from scrap yards are false economy you never know what you are getting you may be lucky and it works for years or it might have come from a car thats done 150,000 miles+ and will let you down as soon as you look at it likewise buying a brand new one is extortionate to the extreme best thing to do is get it to someone who can repair it properly usually averages out at about £50 depending whats wrong with it but when repaired is like a brand new one which would otherwixse cost an arm and a leg.

Does it push start? If so, it might be starter, if not, its something else. Coil pack perhaps if the spark plugs aren't firing, or distributer, or HT leads, or bad earth...
