Rewire

I have been told that my house needs rewiring. It is a 3 bed semi. I have been quoted £4000. Basic rewire and no downlighters, mood lighting, fancy stuff, etc. Any electricians out there. What do you think of the quote? Thanks.

Sounds a little steep to me unless it's a really big semi. The answer is - get some more quotes - lots of them. I'd be surprised if you couldn't at least halve that amount.

Sound expensive to me as well, but it could be that much if you are based in London!

Why does it need rewiring?

Have you had a Periodic Inspection report to tell you this?

If your cables are of the thermosetting (rubbery sheathing type) type then what you have heard may be correct.

If you haven't had a PIR I suggest you spend around £150 to get one done by a reputable electrician. Remember though, to do a PIR an electrician does NOT need to be Part P registered.
