Windows Media Player says it can't play DVD's, though it used to work.

It's been a few months since I tried playing a DVD. It all used to work fine.
I put a DVD in tonight and it came up with.
"Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open display in control panel, and then lower your screen resolution and colour quality settings. To view DVD troubleshooter click More Information."
Error ID = 0xC00D116A, Condition ID = 0x00000000
I've had a quick google and there's reams of info out there. I've followed the instructions of a trouble shooter and nothing made any difference.
Media player will play wmv files on my hard drive fine. It won't play DVD's that used to work. So I guess that an update has changed something.
Any ideas?

I'm just updating the video driver. See what difference that makes.
Might also try reinstalling media player.
I like the idea of another player.Happy chappy0 -
Lost interest and downloaded that VLC players. Works fine, only took about 30s to install too.
Is this another example of the rubbish Microsoft products?Happy chappy0 -
Well VLC media player comes with all its own codecs built in.
Maybe your Windows Media Player just need codecs re-installing after its upgrade.
In my opinion, you're better off with VLC. It plays all sorts of files that you may come across.

I've just reinstalled windows media player, but it still won't work.
So I've run the "Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility"
and it finds one MPEG-2 Decoder (ffdshow) and warns me that "the decoder is not compatible with the synchronisation feature of Windows media player 10."
So do I need to find a codec that is?Happy chappy0 -
I'VE FIXED IT!
I installed the Klite codec pack and ticked the MPEG-2 codec option in the installation. All works now.Happy chappy0 -
Glad it's sorted.
