Account in credit yet asked to pay?

Hi

This is my first post, I hope i'm in the right place.

I have one credit card which I only use online or for big purchases and I always pay off in full each month.

A week before xmas I bought a large amount of items from a shop using this card and waited until the recipiants were happy with their items before I paid the card off at the beginning of the year.

However, my dad decided last week he didn't want the shirt I bought him anymore, he couldn't come with me to swap it so I simply got a refund onto my card which seems straight forward. Now though my account balance is being shown as CR for example £30.00CR and it says a minumum repayment is required, surely though since this is a refund I shouldn't have to pay it off?!

On the statement online it is shown as a payment recieved with a minus beside it as though i've paid a balance off.

Very confused, many thanks. :o

Have you thought about asking the company that issued the card about it?
  • That's my port of call tomorrow, I wanted to see if anyone had any opinions, ideas or if I was missing something really obvious.

some companies ..including MBNA demand a 'proper payment' even if you have a refund

best to pay the minimum and then spend on the card
  • You obtained a shirt and returned it. This in effect was not a purchase on which the credit card company made a profit. With a little bit of thought you could buy something, e.g. from Argos, once a month and return it two weeks later and then never make a minimum payment. So for that reason I am on the side of the credit card company on this matter.

Refunds or chargebacks do not usually count as a payment. A payment is strictly money sent by YOU to the account. Make sure you pay the mininum amount they've requested in time or they will charge you a late payment fee.

The refund will reduce your balance even more (i.e. increase the CRedit amount).

As said above, call them to get it sorted, but don't not pay - I'm certain you'll fall foul of their Ts and Cs :)

I just want to ask are you saying you have an actual credit balance on the account so you dont actually have a balance to pay off and they owe you money? Just asking cause if thats the case then no you shouldnt need to make any sort of payment. However if it is in debit and you think the refund should count as a payment then im afraid its doesnt and you need to make a payment.

I think she meant the latter cos she said she always pays it off.....then mentions if the account is in credit why should she make a payment...I may be wrong though
