when our local tesco opened they leaflet dropped everywhere with money off shopping...the vouchers to be used every week for 6 - 8 weeks...( to get you into the habit of going there ) there was a map of the area and showing you where the tescos was...the main shopping street in the little vilage. accross the road was left out of the map... but yet they put the coucil estate road in......no consideration at all....

we cant live with them....we now cant live without them....or could we?

i am up to my eyeballs in debt and need to watch EVERY penny...and with the supermarkets excepting money off coupons...and the price diff...on my necessities....i can not afford to do all my shopping in local independent shops.....yes i support where i can. as i said earlier i use my local butcher...yes the meat is more expensive.. but there is no comparison when it comes to quality and taste.....
but to me washing up liquid is just washing up liquid.....as tescos basic is 13p.... and the local indepndent is far more than that......i am trying to reduce my debt and the only way is to cut my out goings....and save where i can....so at the moment.....my only option is the supermarkets.....again....the price nad then taking money off coupons without buying the products.......

I went to my local shop yesterday to buy one loaf of white bread and one wholemeal loaf. There was no price showing on the labels so I went to the till and it came to a whopping £2.10 !!!!!

Tesco bread is 24p and 28p so yes it is great to support these independent stores but when they charge such high prices it's no wonder we turn to the supermarkets. We had £7.00 off our shopping (including the bread) today at Tescos using vouchers and as they say ............ every little helps !

I do similar - in that anything with flavour, eg: meat and stuff, I buy at the butchers. The difference in taste is massive - if you only buy food in supermarkets you can forget that food actually tastes of something!!!

Other stuff, eg: washing up powder, sprays that I don't eat - then Tesco's/ Asda / Morrisons gets my trade.

    hi.. rambler and welsh dragon....

rambler i couldnt put it better....i try to get quality food from local retailers.. and then use tescos for the manufactured things....i have recently got an allotment... so there will be nothing to beat the freshness and quality there hopefully.....
but at the end of the day theres no way i could afford to do ALL my shopping for food and household items in local independent shops....
and again...i use a lot of money off coupons when i can get them.....to try and cut my outgoings...so i can get myself out of this financial pickle that we are in.....but as i have said earlier.. i will try my hardest to come out of the supermarket....with the best deal possible....for me....not the supermarket...

theres supporting your local shop, and then they fleece you!!

For me, if i were against supermarkets then "on principle" i wouldnt use them.No matter what the cost, even if i were i debt, even if they did accept vouchers. Its the principle of the thing.

hi.. amancalledchip.....fair enough we've all got principles on all types of topics etc....but would you go deeper and deeper into to debt because of a principle......yes i hate what supermarkets are doing to local communities etc... but if i only got £20. spare this week to do my household shopping...where would you suggest i go..? and thats for 4 people and packed lunches for the kids....its is hard very very hard...i dont think principles come into it then.....
just because i can not carry out what i believe in...doesnt mean i dont believe

hi...i am sure i heard or read somewhere that tescos is in the top 5 world supermarkets for turnover...(i think this is right)....and they are so powerfull that the more or less allways get what they want when it comes to planning etc....we campaigned not to have the tescos built in the next village as it would kill local business...18 months down the line....you can now see the effects...which they said would not happen.....so i feel justified in any extra i can get out of them.... as what we are doing with vouchers r & r's is just like a grain of sand on the beach....
also just going over what welsh dragon have said about the way they treat their suppliers....it is also known that they agree a price for a product... say lettuce ..and they tell that supplier they want x amount... when the lettuce are ready to go into the stores....tescos turn round and change the price to a lower one....and then the farmer's back is against the wall does he take the price drop or lose all the crop.....also they have done deals and agreed to take fresh produce... and have arranged a certain strain...etc.... and then at the last minute have cancelled the order.... and the farmer is left again with not a leg to stand on.......

Not just that, when they buy products from Spain (my sister is a sales director in a fruit and vegetable coop) they check the factory, they make decisions of how to pack what, caliber , and as you said change their order at last minute. Now is melons so my sis is waiting for a huge order as the weather is very good over here.
