New wing mirror...

Some utter b@stard decided to completely rip off my passenger side wing mirror while it was parked on the main road last night.

I have a mk 5 Golf (54 plate), and i'm just trying to get a feel for how much it will cost to buy a replacement, get it sprayed & fitted.

I believe its the electric/heated/primed/ with lamp version I am after. I have found a site which will sell the mirror + painting for £115... (excluding fitting) which appears to be a lot more expensive than the mk 4 version!!

Can anyone give any tips or pointers please???

You'd still need to have it painted.

If you can't find genuine in a breakers - then I would recommend getting genuine VW one and getting a local garage to fit it. Euro car parts are cheap and cheap is what you will get. I'd rather get the genuine mirror - and VW parts are priced very reasonably and you know it will be right for your car.

A different make of car but my honda jazz needed a new one and it was a heated one with all the trimmings and it was £350 heated.

the most galling thing about it was that I knocked it off myself trying to move the wheely bin out of the way with the car as it was raining and I didn't want to get out the car and get wet to move the wheely bin so I could put the car up the drive. doh! Not very MSE

Not good Ali-t! You could've been jammy and found just the right one at a breakers. They can be expensive depending on manufacturer etc. lexus can be scary - had one where just the glass needed replacing, and that was over £300 plus VAT!!

  • find one on a breakers yard or ebay

if you are struggling to find one in the right colour get any old one, then keep your eye on ebay, then all you have to do it change the colour coded part over, then sell the one that wasnt quite right on ebay

easy to fit, dont let a garage rip you off

I sell car panels through work and i can confirm the MK5 mirrors are significantly more expensive than MK4 golfs. Main issue is that whilst a mk4 mirror is electric and heated the MK5 one has the indicator built in which obviously makes it more complex and therefore more expensive to make.
