Need a new Wireless Router for new Broadband

Afternoon :)

I'm after a router for my new broadband connection - but some say with and others say without modem but what's the point of having a router without a modem or am I missing something here?

I've got a g wireless card in my laptop and we have a desktop which isn't wireless enabled at all so I'm also wondering if we have to have the router on the master socket or if we can put it on the end of an extension? The extension was probably installed with the house around 15-20 years ago but will it be ok do you think?

I've seen a few routers on Kelkoo but it's very daunting - if someone could tell me what I should be looking for I'd be very thankful

That, is an excellent question...

okay, you want a wireless ethernet broadband router that way, the router is the modem. Having a modem connected to a router to computers can get very complicated.

I would suggest a netgear for somebody who doesn't know what they are doing, if you don't know what you're doing AVOID Linksys as there routers, while good, can be a bit daunting to set up.

Your PC should have an ethernet card built in with the motherboard, the socket will look like a phone line socket if its there, otherwise you can buy an ethernet card to install ont your motherboard, or a USB dongle (which some netgear routers come with)

If you have a cable connection, you need one without. If you are using ADSL broadband then you need one with an ADSL modem.

Well I don't have cable and yes it's ADSL that I'll be going for. What kind of price should I be looking for and it it worth going for one of the newer 108Mbps data speeds, seeing as my service is only 8Mbps?

no benefit getting a 108 for the forseable future. Netgear dg834g would do the job. Also check https://www.ebuyer.com for prices. Around £60-65.

There are cheaper options available if you are on a budget (safecom etc..).

Whatever you get, you need to setup wpa-encryption, and disable the ssid broadcasting, to stop others attaching to your network. Come back for advice when you get it, if you are stuck.

You can put it on an extension, best to use the main PC wired.. But the alternative is to buy a wireless card or usb adapter for the main PC, then you can put the router near the main phone point, and forget about the extension.

If you have a look around you might get a bundle with a card for your pc included in the price.
