what to arrange between exchange and completion?

Hi

I am a first time buyer due to exchange tomorrow and hopefully complete next Friday. Apologies if this has been posted before (which I'm sure it probably has!)

What exactly can I start arranging once I have my completion date apart from removals? When can I give notice for my council tax, electricity, water etc? Do I advise them of my new address at this stage also (I will be staying in the same borough for council tax and vendor has already advised that his water is through thames water as is mine at the moment)

Thanks for all your help in advance!

    • Contact all the utilities and the local authority for council tax and (if it's relevant) parking permits
    • Get change of address cards done (vista print are very cheap - cheaper than printing on your own PC, I think) and start letting people know
    • Set up post forwarding with the Royal Mail
    • Get a load of menus from local takeways - you'll probably be too tired to cook

Thanks for the advice seabright, especially about the menus - I hadnt even thought of that!!
So once I have a date set I can start calling round and changing things over.
Anyone have any idea what I do with sky? I am out of contract in my rented place with them at the moment and have been for some time and I know that the flat I'm buying has sky for tv,phone and broadband but is it just a matter of calling them and getting them to reconnect a new package in my name or will they have to come out?
  • Hi,

just check the Sky site, I am moving soon and they say to contact two weeks before, look on the sky site all the info is on there, they have direct number for people moving http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyhelpcentre/accountadvice?nodeId=80b993da-92bc-4d0c-997e-cc12539a9fb4&articleId=4686910

Council tax should just transfer your account so you wont have any changes uless the band changes, check the utilities web sites as you can enter meter readings for your place and the new property on line.
