Can I use a current year estimate and what to expect.

Due to changes at work, our household income will drop like a stone from April.
Can I ask them to take an estimate of our 2010/11 income instead of my actual income for the 2009/10 tax year when assessing our payments?
Also, can I do this with tax credits AND child credits?
The estimate will be best case scenario at this time(the actual could be a couple of k less).

  • Yes you can though bear in mind you need to overestimate because you do not get the £25000 disregard and you are at risk of an overpayment.
  • Thanks for that, it's just trying to work it out thats the hassle now. Every calculators different.
Probably better to phone them and ask.

    Thanks again.

You will need to remember and call up as soon as any change of circumstance happens
  • Yes, but I've never bothered so far as the drop so far hasnt took us down any when I do a calculator. It will however come April.
Is there anywhere I could get confirmation of the figures I'm getting from directgov? Who would be better to call?

You wont get a confirmation only an estimate untill you give the figures over at the end of the tax year
  • An estimate that confirms the calculators is all I need really. Benefits agency best bet?
I cant believe what the direct gov site estimates we can get.
If it's in any way close, come April, I can stop overtime at my work, my wife can stay on her career break to raise the kids and we'll be no worse off.
  • Go to your local CAB who can give you estimates of your entitlements.
