Any Info on Maastricht?

Options
We finally got our posting order and we're off to Masstricht in the Netherlands.

I've searched the army site and google for any information on the facilities and schools etc but can't find anything. I normally have a nosey at the community service guides or on the Hive site but it's not on there :-(

Anyone know anything about Maastricht?

  • An excellent city if you like socialising and eating out and second only to Berlin in this respect IMHO. I presume you will be working at Tapijn Kaserne rather than up at Brunssum (although you may be parented by them)? If so the barracks are right on the edge of town and just a quick 5 minute walk in. The quarters used to be in the district of De-Heeg and are a mixture of flats and houses (both were pretty good in comparison to UK quarters). There are also quarters in Geleen, Heerlen and Brunssum. If they offer you the flats at Florence Nightingale (Brunssum) then I would suggest some mystery ailment that prevents you living in flats!!;)The housing estate at De-Heeg had a bank, chippy, chinese and bar and the one at Geleen was on the outskirts of a decent little town. The caves was the most unique of working places but they shut in 92 so you wont have that joy but you will still be able to visit them and that in itself is quite interesting as the locals hid down them during WWII.

Kids went to the Windsor school at Rheindahlen (60 miles away), boarding Mon-Fri and bussed home at weekends although some went to an International school somewhere IIRC. The airport is 15 miles or so out of town on the A2 and Ryanair fly in from Stansted. Maastricht is located in a little Teardrop at the bottom of Holland called South Limburg and it is an ideal base for exploring Holland, Belgium and Germany.

Valkenburg is just up the A2 and is a really nice place to visit, especially at Christmas. If there is anything specific that you think of then feel free to PM me but I will say that I had 2 tours there and loved every minute of it!! Enjoy!:D See the link for some general info on schools, accom and cars!

  • Thank you so much for the quick reply, that's great!
Really hoping for a house but a flat wouldn't be the end of the world. Hopefully the dog and child will sway them into giving us a house lol.
Will have a nosey at the site you posted.
    Thanks again :-)
